How to Hire Marketing and Growth Talent

We cover why it’s crucial to apply marketing and growth thinking to build your talent pipeline, find talent in places that others aren’t looking, and some of the best tips we’ve found to get the best people to join your company.



One of the most common questions we get asked on the show from founders is – “can you help me find marketing and growth talent.

When building a talent pipeline for your marketing & growth team, think of it as building a marketing funnel.

You need to approach the acquisition of talent in the same way as you would leads or free users.

You first create a ‘customer persona’ for the person you’re trying to hire. In the episode, we talk about how to divide this into three main buckets:

1. Personality Traits
2. Core Skills
3. Technical Skills

The above are stacked ranked in order of priority. It’s a lot harder to coach personality traits than it is technical skills.

Once you’ve crafted a persona for your ideal fit candidate, you can then start to develop an acquisition plan that attracts these people to your hiring funnel. We call this “going where the fish are.” We cover three examples:

1. Marketing Courses: Searching for people who’ve completed courses on the subjects that form part of the core and technical skills.
2. Twitter: Look for people who are following known experts in the space. It shows that they’re both passionate about the area and keen to learn.
3. Blogs: They’ve contributed to blogs in the space.

Once you’ve established where your ideal customers/talent are, you can create tactics to help scale acquisition through those channels.
